CARPE CORPUS: Book 6 Morganville Vampires - Rachel Caine

From the back of the book: Welcome to Morganville, Texas. Don't stay out after dark.
In the small college town of Morganville, vampires and humans live in (relative) peace--until all the rules got rewritten when evil vampire Bishop arrived, looking for the lost book of vampire secrets. He's kept a death grip on the town ever since.
Now an underground resistance is brewing, and in order to contain it, Bishop must go to even greater lengths. He vows to obliterate the town and all its inhabitants--the living and the undead. Claire Danvers and her friends are the only ones who stand in his way. But even if they defeat Bishop, will the vampires be content to go to the old rules after having had such a taste of power?
**********************
I am always exhausted while reading this series, but it's well worth the debilitation.
Claire is always trying to do the right thing while being young, uber intelligent, in love and living in a town of vampires. Shane is in vampire jail, Michael is working for the bad guy, Eve hates her and her vampire mentor, Myrnin, is on the edge of madness. She's got to do what it takes to make things better if possible, if the good guys will let her help.
This is one of my favorite series. And now this one is my favorite of the series. Each one has that 'honor' as I read it and each next one has the possibility.
Highly recommedable to anyone who enjoys a well written story, vampire or otherwise.
Five Texas vampires aren't all bad (and not all good) beans.....

Books in the House Monday

So...I made a little visit to Orchard Bookstore Sunday afternoon after seeing the movie Astro Boy at the show with Lady K (good flick BTW). I had a box of trade ins and I looked around while they perused my offerings. They took them all and I found four for my shelves and one for my sister and two for Lady K. Lady K's picks were Christmas in style, one is for Christmas crafts which will be fun to do together.
My picks are:
CARPE CORPUS - Rachel Caine, book 6 Morganville Vampires
FADE OUT - Rachel Caine, book 7 Morganville Vampires
SMALL FAVOR - Jim Butcher, book 10 Dresden Files
BLOOD RETRIBUTION - David and Aimee Thurlo, book 2 Lee Nez series
And I picked up
GARDEN SPELLS - Sarah Addison Allen for my sister
What made it into your house?

LORD OF MISRULE #5 Morganville Vampires - Rachel Caine

From the back of the book: Morganville, Texas. Just south of normal...
In the college town of Morganville, vampires and humans have coexisted in (relatively) bloodless harmony...until the arrival of Bishop, a master vampire wo threatens to put the evil back in evil undead and smash the fragile peace. But Bishop isn't the only threat...
Violent black clouds promise a storm of devastating proportions. As student Claire Danvers and her friends prepare to defend Morganville against the elements ---both natural and unnatural---the unexpected happens: Morganville's vampires begin to vanish one by one. Discovering why leads Claire to one last choice: Swear allegiance to Bishop....or die.

DAGNAB YOU RACHEL CAINE!!! Dagnab you to heck for being a fab writer and leaving such a hellah dangly cliffhanger!! One saving grace, I can go get #6 CARPE CORPUS sooner since I didn't read LORD OF MISRULE until well after it came out. CARPE is on the shelves as of June so I can get relative immediate satisfaction...just have to get to the bookshop or hit the send button on the book order.
The first in the series, GLASS HOUSES, will remain my favorite, but LORD OF MISRULE is a very close second. There is a lot of suspense, vamp action, bad vamps being good and (relatively) good vamps getting bad. Young love for the peeps who need that little bit of angst. There are good fight scenes and page turning tension all over the place. I finished this in record time and could easily have sat in one place and read it in one sitting..but I have silly things like work, a DH and a 6 year old, chores, etc...so no sitting in one spot for very long. As it was, I stayed up waaay past my bedtime to read "just one more page".

Five swangin' cliffhangah beans......

HEAT STROKE: WEATHER WARDEN BOOK 2 - Rachel Caine

I really like this series, even only having read two of them. I started reading Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series first since I love my vampire books. I heard so many good things about the Weather Warden series, I decided to give the first one a try. She had me at the fast cars Joanne Baldwin, Weather Warden, adores driving.

Joanne was accused of murder, hunted down and killed by her Weather Warden peeps. She was reborn as Djinn, the magic creatures who help the Wardens channel power to control Mother Nature. Only thing is, humans aren't really supposed to be made into Djinn and Joanne and David, the Djinn who remade her into one of him, are in some trouble now.

Something is causing havoc in Earth's atmosphere and it looks like Joanne is the only one for the job according to her friend, Lewis, one of the most powerful Wardens out there.

Joanne now has to learn to be a Djinn by feeding from the Earth's energy rather than continue to syphon from David's or they both will die. And she has to help Lewis repair the rift or Earth will die.

Four windswept beans......bookmark...

FEAST OF FOOLS: Book 4 MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES - Rachel Caine

HOT DAY-UM! I swear, this series just gets more amazing with each volume.
There's a new vampire in town and he's an even bigger evil badass than all the others combined. Mr. Bishop's also the father of Amelia, the Founder of Morganville, so you know he's honkin' ancient and powerful.
All in town are to swear fealty to the sinister old guy in town and there's still the cure for the taint that is causing the old vampires to go mad after so many years. It's caused Amelia to put a stop to making new vampires until the cure is found. It's what's helped keep the balance (as much balance as can be in the town of Morganville), so what is going to happen to the status quo if the cure is found.
Then there's the relationships of the four in the Glass house. Claire and Shane are still in teen love. Shane being a gentleman, and Claire being 16, has put a halt to anything further than some heavy smooching. Claire is really wishing Shane wasn't so much the gentleman....but respects him for the person he is....just wishing 17th birthday would hurry up and get here.
Eve and Michael are massively enamoured and are old enough to act on it. Shane is coming to grips with Michael being a vampire now instead of the ghost of the house.
OH, and there's the arrival of another set of parents....Claire's mom and dad move to town!
Claire is hard pressed to decide which of all of the above is the most mind-numbingly stressful.

I will read anything Rachel Caine writes! She left me hangin' at the end of FEAST OF FOOLS and I didn't even get mad. I just want her to write faster!!!

Five smokin' hot beans!!

MIDNIGHT ALLEY: Morganville Vampires, Book 3 - Rachel Caine

I tell ya, this series just keeps getting better! They are exhausting reads since everything and anything keeps happening to these four in the Glass House in short amounts of time. And they are scrappy! They get back up and face the big bad.

Morganville is a town run by and for vampires. It also a college town...hey a vamp's gotta eat, yeah?

Claire is the main character. She's learned a lot for a new in town 16 year old college freshman. She knows to stay away from the mayor's daughter, Monica, a mean biotch (and that's being nice), who would as soon push Claire down a flight of stairs as look at her. There's Jason, brother of Claire's best friend Eve. He is a puh-sycho of the most evil kind and after Claire. Then there are the vamps. Even the nice ones have agendas and Claire plays a part in most of them. Cannot wait to read #4, FEAST OF FOOLS.
Four enthusiastic beans!

DEAD GIRLS' DANCE: The Morganville Vampires, Book 2 - Rachel Caine

Sat on the recumbent bike for an extra 30 minutes this morning just so I could finish this book. The first of the series, GLASS HOUSES, was fantastic and my introduction to Rachel Caine's work. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series, but I also wanted to savor them. They are like dark chocolate. So now I have the third on in the series on Mt Git'r'Read and not sure how long I can stay on this diet. I will have to move MIDNIGHT ALLEY up to near top of the stack. I think I can wait until next month. Maybe a good Valentine's Day read....

Synopsis from B&N:
Claire has her share of challenges. Like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains; homicidal girls in her dorm, and finding out that her college town is overrun with the living dead. On the up side, she has a new boyfriend with a vampire-hunting dad. But when a local fraternity throws the Dead Girls' Dance, hell is really going to break loose.

Without giving any sneakpeeks, I think the above synopsis says it all and you will have to read it for the whole wicked cool story.

ILL WIND: WEATHER WARDEN Book One - Rachel Caine

I finished Rachel Caine's ILL WIND in next to no time. My reading time has become rather limited lately, so this was no mean feat. It was a joy to read and I very much can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I want Jo's two cars. Delilah a very sweet '76 Mustang Mach 1. O..M..G!...sadly that one gets destroyed and Jo has to move on to Mona, a '97 Dodge Viper GTS. Lordy, this woman knows how to pick 'em!! I'd read the series if only for the cars. Yay that the series is super even without the cars.
